Etz Chaim Jewish Primary School

"The best thing about my school is the ukulele lessons." Year 3

Music

At Etz Chaim, we encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build up the confidence of all children. Music and singing is developed through topic teaching, during our music lessons and through Jewish learning from Reception through to Year 6. Particular attention is given to music through Jewish festivals where the children are taught songs that relate to significant events in the Jewish calendar. Our music teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to understand rhythm and follow a beat. We teach them to listen and to appreciate different forms of music. Children develop descriptive language skills in music lessons when learning about how music can represent different feelings, emotions and narratives. We also teach technical vocabulary such as volume, pitch, beat and rhythm and encourage children to discuss music using these terms.

Our music curriculum ensures students sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate and is embedded in our lessons. We offer ukulele lessons through BEATS in Year 3 to add to our music curriculum.

Additional opportunities are offered in music, such as taking groups of children to perform at events in the local community. We also have peripatetic music teachers who comes into school to teach violin and piano.

We hope that all of our children will develop a love of music, both from the performing and participation point and through the appreciation and evaluation of the work of others.

  • Children will enjoy listening to and making music
  • Children will learn to love different genres of music and how it makes them feel
  • Children will to learn to perform with confidence

Exposure to music will also:

  • Reduce feelings of anxiety and stress
  • Help children regulate their emotions
  • Improve concentration and on-task behaviour
  • Enhance the way children can process language and speech
